Profil Diego Perez

Diego is an associate in our international arbitration group, based in New York.

Diego focuses his practice on investment and commercial disputes in Latin America, and specializes in international law and arbitration. He has acted in arbitrations under ICSID, ICSID Additional Facility, ICC and the LCIA rules. He has represented and advised investors in multiple jurisdictions and across a variety of sectors, including financial, agroindustry and infrastructure and transport sectors.

Prior to joining Freshfields, Diego worked as legal advisor on inter-state disputes for a government agency, and at a dispute resolution boutique in Santiago, Chile, where he focused in complex disputes related to concession contracts, advising concessionaires in their disputes with the state, and in commercial arbitrations.

Diego speaks English and Spanish.

Mandate

Diego’s experience includes advising/representing:

  • ADP International and VINCI Airports in their ICSID arbitration against Chile under the France-Chile BIT related to their investment in the company holding the Santiago airport concession.
  • BBVA in its ICSID Additional Facility arbitration against Bolivia under the Spain-Bolivia BIT. The dispute arises out of government measures nationalising the pension fund administration service provided by BBVA’s Bolivian subsidiary.
  • Grupo Agroinsumos Ibero-Americanos in an ICSID arbitration against Venezuela under the Venezuela-Spain BIT, resulting from the expropriation of its investment in the most important agricultural production and services group in Venezuela.
  • An international company in an arbitration against a Central American government relating to a concession to operate four airports.

  • Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies, New York University School of Law (2020).
  • Law degree, Universidad de Chile (2015).
  • Admitted to practice in Chile (2016).*
