Profil Mark Appleton

Mark is an associate in our Dispute Resolution Group based in New York, focusing on complex commercial litigation, investigations, and national security matters. He has also previously advised clients on M&A and corporate affairs.

 

Prior to joining Freshfields, Mark spent several years serving in national security and policy positions across the U.S. government. As Special Advisor to the Energy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy and then as an appointee at the U.S. State Department, he advised the White House, cabinet secretaries, and other senior U.S. government officials on national security, foreign policy, and energy and climate matters. In these roles, he also helped to negotiate and implement a landmark multilateral nuclear nonproliferation agreement. In the Senate, Mark served as Foreign Policy Advisor to a U.S. Senator, collaborating with congressional offices and committees, federal agencies, advocacy groups, and companies on foreign policy and defense work, including legislation, hearings, and oversight.

 

Before serving in government, Mark lived abroad in Delhi, India as a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar.
